You know what you want to say. Then the hesitation begins.
Â
Is it est or soit?
You pause. Change your sentence. Perhaps avoid saying it altogether.
Or you recognize the subjunctive when you read it, but still wonder why the writer chose that form.
Imagine beginning to understand the choice instead.
Recognizing a familiar expression. Understanding why the subjunctive belongs there. Feeling more comfortable trying it in a sentence of your own.
That is what Subjunctive Made Simple helps you work towards, through a cultural story you can follow, enjoy and return to.
I’m Charles, also known as Carlito.
I created this course to bring together two things you do not have to choose between: understanding French grammar and enjoying French culture.
Â
Learn the grammar through the story.
Understand the story through the grammar.
Â
Our cultural immersion method brings the French subjunctive into a world you can follow.
At the heart of the course is Échec au roi, an original story written exclusively for these lessons and set in the France of Louis XIV.
You follow the story in French, meeting examples of the subjunctive inside the situations where they are used. Then Tim explains the language you have just encountered.
The rules still matter. But now you can connect them to a meaning, a moment and an example.
The story gives you a reason to keep reading. The explanations help you understand. The activities let you try the language yourself.
Â
First, experience the story
Read and listen to a chapter in French. Follow the situation and the characters, using the English translation when you need support.
Â
Then, understand the language
Watch the chapter’s recorded lesson with Tim. He explains why the subjunctive appears in the examples and helps you connect the verb form to the meaning of the sentence.
Â
Finally, practice it yourself
Check your understanding with the comprehension quiz, work through the grammar activity and review anything you need to revisit.
You move through the course at your own pace, with written corrections from Yara included.
Step inside Chapter 1
The first chapter is called Revendication sur le trône, or “A Claim to the Throne”.
Here is the opening paragraph:
6h30 du matin. Alors que le Roi dort encore et que le réveil n’est prévu que dans deux heures, l’un des valets du château traverse à toute vitesse la galerie des Glaces en direction de la chambre du Roi.
In English:
It is 6:30 in the morning. The King is still asleep and is not due to wake for another two hours. One of the château’s valets races through the Hall of Mirrors towards the King’s bedchamber.
In the story, disturbing the King could have terrible consequences.
A little later in the scene, we meet this expression:
il se peut que le valet soit exécuté
the valet might be executed
Il se peut que means “it is possible that”. The sentence introduces a possibility, not something that definitely happens.
After this expression, French uses the subjunctive. That is why you see soit, rather than est.
You are not simply learning another verb form.
You are connecting the form to what the sentence means.
Throughout the course, Tim helps you make these connections using examples from the story.
Then you practice making choices of your own.
Try reading the French first, then use the English for support.
You do not need to understand every word.
Notice whether you can follow the main idea and whether this feels like a story you would enjoy exploring.

Meet Tim, your guide to the grammar
Â
Timothée Lesoin, whom we call Tim in this course, is a native French teacher who works with learners from around the world.
For Tim, learning a language is also about connecting with its culture.
In Subjunctive Made Simple, he guides you through the examples you have just encountered in the story. His role is to help you understand not only which form appears, but why it is used there.
You can pause the lesson, watch an explanation again and return to the sentence before practicing it yourself.
The story gives you the context.
Tim helps you understand the language.
Your practice brings the two together.
Written feedback from Yara is included
Â
Understanding an example is one thing.
Trying the language in your own sentence is the next step.
Post your practice sentences and course questions in the comments.
Yara, a French teacher, will help you review your French and understand what to improve.
You have guidance as you move from understanding the examples to using the language yourself.
